You can bounce back after a layoff, and sometimes the layoff itself is exactly the push you needed.<\/strong> Terry, my brother, is living proof of it. At the time, though, he didn’t believe it for a second.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, we’re building a company together. This is the story of how he managed to bounce back after a layoff, and what it might do for you if you’re going through the same thing right now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The letter arrived right at Christmas<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Terry received his layoff letter in France, right in the middle of the holidays. Gifts, family dinners, and in the middle of all that, an envelope that changed the color of every day that followed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He hadn’t seen it coming, or rather he hadn’t wanted to see it. The job suited him well enough, the paycheck landed every month, the routine had been in place for years. On paper, nothing pointed to a problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First, he absorbed the shock without reacting on the spot. Then he filed a claim with the French labor court, known there as the conseil de prud’hommes<\/a>. For a reader unfamiliar with the French system, that’s the court that settles disputes between an employee and an employer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While the legal process ran its course, Terry booked a plane ticket to Canada. No network there, no contacts, no detailed plan for what came next.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What he did have was one simple certainty: staying meant accepting that someone else would keep deciding his life for him. And that idea had become unbearable to him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So he left with uncertainty instead of a plan. That can sound risky, and it really was. But staying still was just as risky, only in a way that was harder to see at the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Looking back, Terry says it himself: that layoff is the best thing that ever happened to him. Without it, he’d probably still be waiting for a promotion, the right moment, a permission that no one was ever going to hand him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The real danger was the comfort of his old life, that feeling that things were “good enough” not to change anything, more than the layoff itself. Comfort numbs you, in fact. It never hurts enough to make you move on your own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So it took getting pushed out the door for him to go after what he should have aimed for on his own. In his case, bouncing back after a layoff was mostly a decision: stop enduring things, and start choosing, even blindfolded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here’s what actually mattered, in his journey, for bouncing back after a layoff. Nothing mandatory or miraculous here, just what genuinely played a role.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  2. Take stock of what you actually know how to do.<\/strong> Some skills only exist inside your old job. Others, however, hold value everywhere else. So you need to learn to tell them apart.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. Pick an imperfect direction instead of waiting for the perfect one.<\/strong> Action creates information, while waiting creates none. So moving forward through the fog teaches you more than standing still ever will.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  4. Take one irreversible first step.<\/strong> A ticket, a sign-up, a first client: something that makes turning back more costly than moving forward. That’s often, in fact, what actually strengthens a decision.<\/li>\n\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    None of these levers guarantee anything on their own. They simply make moving forward more likely than waiting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    You don’t need to cross an ocean<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Not everyone needs to get on a plane to come out the other side. Sometimes it simply means finding a role that fits you better, in the same city, in the same career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    A layoff is, after all, just one trigger among others: a divorce, an illness, a business closing down can produce the same effect. What matters plays out mostly in the decision that follows the event, more than in the event itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The common thread, in every case, stays the same: deciding instead of enduring. Bouncing back after a layoff, or after any other shock, comes down to that, not to the distance traveled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
